Il Trattato sull\u2019Antartide fu firmato a Washington il 1\u00b0 dicembre 1959<\/strong><\/span> ed entr\u00f2 in vigore nel 1961.<\/p>\n Nacque dall\u2019esperienza dell\u2019Anno Geofisico Internazionale (AGI) del 1957-58, che coinvolse 67 Paesi in un progetto di collaborazione scientifica<\/strong> senza precedenti, con osservazioni coordinate della Terra, del Sole e dell’atmosfera.<\/p>\n In Antartide furono organizzate, per la prima volta, spedizioni scientifiche su larga scala, dimostrando che la cooperazione scientifica era possibile anche in presenza di tensioni geopolitiche, come quelle in atto durante la \u201cguerra fredda\u201d tra i blocchi sovietico e americano.<\/p>\n Al termine dell\u2019AGI, i 12 Paesi pi\u00f9 attivamente coinvolti nelle ricerche in Antartide<\/strong> (Argentina, Australia, Belgio, Cile, Francia, Giappone, Nuova Zelanda, Norvegia, Paesi Bassi, Regno Unito, Stati Uniti, Unione Sovietica) negoziarono un accordo che, sospendendo le rivendicazioni territoriali gi\u00e0 in atto, ne garantisse l\u2019uso esclusivo per scopi pacifici e scientifici per tutti i Paesi interessati a contribuire alla sua conoscenza e
