L\u2019Oceano Meridionale che circonda l\u2019Antartide si estende fino al fronte subtropicale, dove le acque pi\u00f9 dolci e fredde subantartiche incontrano quelle pi\u00f9 salate e calde subtropicali. La zona di interazione \u00e8 marcata dalla <span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">Corrente Circumpolare Antartica (CCA)<\/span>, una fascia larga fino a 500 km, che si muove verso est e che trasporta dai 120 ai 140 milioni di metri cubi di acqua al secondo. A ridosso del continente le correnti scorrono in senso opposto alla CCA, generando la divergenza antartica. L\u2019interno del continente, sull\u2019altopiano antartico (tra 2.000 m e 4.500 m), \u00e8 caratterizzato da un <strong>clima freddo e desertico<\/strong>, con un accumulo nevoso annuo di circa 50 mm.<\/p>\n<p>Le grandi differenze di temperatura e densit\u00e0 dell\u2019aria tra l\u2019interno e la costa generano i <strong>venti catabatici<\/strong>, tra i pi\u00f9 forti del mondo: masse d\u2019aria fredda e densa che scivolano dagli altopiani verso la costa, accelerate dalla forza di gravit\u00e0.<\/p>\n<p>L\u2019interazione tra le acque della <strong>Corrente Circumpolare<\/strong> con le acque di fusione dei ghiacciai antartici rende l\u2019Oceano Meridionale una forza trainante delle correnti oceaniche globali. Lo scambio di calore con l\u2019atmosfera <strong>favorisce la formazione continua di nuovo<\/strong>, <strong>sottile<\/strong> <strong>ghiaccio marino<\/strong> e il conseguente <strong>aumento di salinit\u00e0 e densit\u00e0 delle acque<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Il trasporto di acque profonde fredde verso l\u2019equatore e di acque superficiali calde verso i poli contribuisce alla redistribuzione del calore e all&#8217;assorbimento della CO\u2082 atmosferica.<\/p>\n<p>Senza questo continuo scambio di calore, alcune regioni della Terra sarebbero <strong>molto pi\u00f9 calde<\/strong> o <strong>molto pi\u00f9 fredde<\/strong> di come le conosciamo oggi.
